#The Radiance of the Heart: Ahmed’s Journey#
Ahmed stood by the large window of his bedroom, watching the city streets, which seemed to have put on a face that was not their own. The sky sparkled with strange colors, and electric garlands stretched like spiderwebs across every corner, announcing the bustling excitement of New Year’s Eve. Ahmed watched the crowd with curiosity, but a gentle confusion filled his young heart: despite all the splendor, he felt a certain emptiness.
At that moment, his grandfather Mohamed entered the room with his usual grace. He pulled up an old wooden chair to sit beside his grandson. Noticing Ahmed’s gaze fixed on the colorful lamps, he asked in a deep voice full of tenderness:
— “What are you thinking about, my son? Are you dazzled by this borrowed radiance filling the streets?”
Ahmed turned to his grandfather and whispered:
— “Grandfather, the whole city is glowing, and people seem to be racing toward joy. Why do we feel this peaceful stillness while the world is bustling around us? Are we strangers to this celebration?”
The grandfather smiled and gently placed his hand on Ahmed’s shoulder, as if to pass on the warmth of his years of wisdom:
— “Ahmed, every nation has its own scale for measuring time, and a heart that beats to the rhythm of its own certainty. What you see there is a year folding up like an old scroll; it is an external decoration that can be extinguished with a simple gesture, just by pulling the plug. But we, my little one, possess lights that borrow their brilliance from no one. They are suns that are born inside us.”
The grandfather continued, his eyes shining with the light of wisdom:
— “Our holidays, like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, are not just numbers on a calendar. They are journeys of the soul toward its Creator. At Eid al-Fitr, we celebrate our victory over our desires, and at Eid al-Adha, we celebrate the values of sacrifice and loyalty. That is the light that never fades, for it is linked to the Heavens, not to an electric socket.”
Ahmed asked curiously:
— “I once read something about ‘positive strangeness’... Is that what we are feeling now?”
The grandfather nodded in approval:
— “Exactly, Ahmed! Being distinct in your identity does not mean being alone; it means carrying your own lantern in the middle of the fog. Positive strangeness is being proud of who you are, even if everyone else takes a different path. Always remember that the true birth of our community, and the deep meaning of our time, began with the Hijra of the Prophet (ï·؛). It was not just a journey from Mecca to Medina; it was the birth of faith and the beginning of a history that mirrors our souls—a story that tells of our bond with God.”
Ahmed looked out at the street again, but this time, his perspective had shifted. The artificial glow was no longer as impressive as before. He said with sincerity:
— “Now I understand, Grandfather. We do not refuse joy, but we choose the one that resembles us; the one that leaves a trace in our hearts and strengthens our pride in being who we are.”
Ahmed returned to his bed, filled with a new sense of peace. As he closed his eyes, he imagined the next Eid al-Fitr, and how he would decorate his heart with faith before decorating his house with lights. He fell asleep with a smile, knowing that he was not a stranger, but the heir to a unique history—one that began with the exile of the Messenger (ï·؛) and continues through the certainty in the heart of every child who knows where they come from.

#L'أ‰clat du Cœur : Le Voyage d'Ahmed#
